The CCRA Cancer
Research Survey is a comprehensive and systematic
approach to collecting information on cancer
research being conducted across Canada.
Data are collected annually from
organizations within the governmental and voluntary
sectors that fund cancer research. Projects are classified on the basis of the Common Scientific
Outline (CSO), a taxonomy of cancer-related research
activity developed by cancer organizations in the US
and UK (see
Common Scientific Outline (CSO)), as well as
cancer site and other classification typologies (see
Research Classification). The most recent survey
is based on 2007 data from 37 organizations (see
Participating Organizations).
The resulting
information has helped to establish a baseline
measure in Canada of the kinds of research being
funded, the level of investment and the nature of
investigator involvement. This
evidence base will be used to inform individual and
joint planning, and facilitate coordination between
funding organizations, where appropriate.
